Speaker Bio
Imani J. is a seasoned criminal defense attorney, law professor, and passionate advocate for social justice. A first-generation college graduate and lawyer, she brings a lived understanding of systemic barriers to every aspect of her work—whether in the courtroom, the classroom, or the community.
Originally from Pennsylvania and now rooted in Georgia, she blends regional perspectives with a deep commitment to empowering underserved communities. With over a decade of experience in criminal defense and three years in legal education, she has built a career dedicated to advocating for her clients, protecting rights, advancing equity, and mentoring the next generation of changemakers.
Her legal practice centers on representing individuals entangled in the criminal legal system, with a focus on holistic defense, dignity, and due process. As a law professor, she teaches with both rigor and empathy, helping students understand not only the law but also the broader systems of power that shape it. Through her Criminal Sentencing course at UGA Law, Imani J. guides her students through the various aspects of sentencing, such as racial disparity, restorative justice, sentencing alternatives, mandatory minimum punishments, constitutional considerations, and more.
Imani J. is a frequent speaker at legal conferences, academic institutions, and community forums, where she shares insights on topics such as criminal justice reform, racial and gender equity, women’s rights, professionalism, and Know Your Rights education. Her talks weave together legal expertise, storytelling, and practical guidance — resonating with audiences from law students to seasoned professionals to grassroots advocates.
Known for her clear, grounded voice and her deep integrity, she continues to speak, teach, and advocate with a singular mission: to educate, empower, uplift, and fight for justice.
