Hey, It’s Imani J.
Hi, I’m Imani J. Carter, but you can call me Imani J. I am a Black woman, believer, criminal defense attorney, law professor, community advocate, speaker, and unapologetic truth-teller.
From the courtroom to the classroom to community forums, I speak on criminal law, justice, rights, and real-life resilience—with a dash of sarcasm and a whole lot of heart. All without forgetting who I am and where I came from.
Book me to speak. | Read my blog.

Lawyer & Professor
I defend people inside courtrooms for a living. I also teach the next generation of lawyers at the University of Georgia School of Law. Only 2% of American lawyers are Black women, and only 5% are Black in general. It’s crucial we walk boldly in our truth and are confident in our skills & abilities.
Just because I’m a lawyer and law professor, that doesn’t mean I can’t write a blog post titled “This Book’s Cover: Living Single Part 3.”

Speaker & Panelist
Looking for a speaker who can break down complex legal issues, connect with real people genuinely, and bring both insight and authentic energy to your event? Whether it’s a legal conference, university lecture, grassroots panel, or Know Your Rights workshop, I bring over 10 years of courtroom and classroom experience to the mic.
Some of my speaking topics include: criminal justice reform, race, gender, & the legal system, and professionalism, leadership, & cultural competence.

Blogger & Storyteller
Law school taught me how to argue. Life taught me how to listen. The blog is where I share both – plus some behind-the-scene stories from the worlds I move through. “Off the Record” is a fun, witty, relatable, and inspirational lifestyle blog.
“Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” – Philippians 1:6 NKJV.
