Welcome to My Life!
My name is Imani J. Carter and this is my page. I am a lawyer, a criminal defense attorney to be exact. Well, a public defender to be really exact. As a public defender, I represent people who are indigent and charged with criminal offenses. I live to fight for my clients. I live to fight for those who feel voiceless, hopeless, and as if their lives are falling apart. I have been a public defender in Athens, Georgia for eight years, and I couldn’t think of having any other career! I also recently started teaching as an adjunct professor at the University of Georgia School of Law! I teach a criminal sentencing course, and I’m still in awe of this opportunity God has blessed me with. 🙏🏽
My passion for helping and serving others has poured into my after-work activities. I strive to get involved in my community to help make Athens a more inclusive and better place for everyone. When I graduated from law school, I was asked, “do you want to remain in Athens?” With no hesitation, I responded, “yes!” Then I was asked, “why? Athens is not meant for young, Black professionals.” That comment resonated with me. That person was right. But I didn’t want them to be right.
Getting a job right after law school was truly a blessing. It has allowed me to live in a city where I can make a difference. It has equipped me to show that young Black professionals can thrive in Athens. And working alongside some amazing people was just the icing on the cake! Public defenders support the community, and I love the community that surrounds me. But I do not plan to talk about my career on this page. I plan to share moments of my life that make me who I am, and in turn, that shape me as a lawyer.
My blog is called “Off The Record.” It’s legal jargon essentially for “no longer officially speaking on the record in the courtroom.” Go ahead and click on “Blog” in the dropdown menu or at the bottom of this page to embark on this journey with me. I am going to share with you everything about Imani J. that is off the record and not filtered. I hope that you can relate to my posts and that they leave you inspired! 😊
Thank you so much for visiting my page! I hope you enjoy it!
